Things are only getting worse in Japan...

    Hopefully everything gets under control

Yeah after they radiate themselves to mutation, and then the rest of the world, they 'll get it under control.

At some point the global community should hold the nuclear manufacturers responsible for crimes against humanity. This is not only a Japanese issue that they 've been handling with half truths and botching it up. This concerns the world. When Chernobyl hit we where blaming the "bad" commies for concealing the truth, and it's the same and worse from Japan twenty five or so years after...

Anyway best of luck to the Japanese people, I wish them courage, but I think the japanese government has a lot to answer for to the rest of the world. Had this happened in some other supposedly authoritarian regime, say Libya, you 'd have had foreign occupation to resolve the dreaded nuclear threat. Alas it's not, and the rest of the world is focusing on their oil in Libya. Billions of dollars for arms are spent against Libya, surely, some global task force with the same amount of money would have handled the nuclear threat much much better in Japan as well as helping people out who 've suffered as a result of the earthquake and tsunami... but it seems people are not evolved enough to care for the future of humanity, but for the short term future of their oil investments they act faster than lightning.

    Really disappointing.

What will you do if Apple do make it bigger?

Well... of course I'll bail on Apple and get an Android or MS based phone!

    NOT! :p

Personally, I don't think they will. I think they are more concerned about all their customers - men and woman. Large and small. They know overall feel in the hand for all their customers is important and that it's important that it slips easily in your pocket. I don't think anyone here can argue that Apple is one of the best, if not the best out there right now, at product design. This does not happen by accident... I'm sure they test and try many variations to get where they're at.

There are more important things they can do than mess with the best smart phone screen on the market.

No matter what, there's always going to be competitors with something that's bigger or more. But again, it's not about any single thing that makes the overall product. It's the overall product that makes the iPhone so great.

What's he banging on about? By "PC guys" who does he mean? Microsoft?

Being a company that produces PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) then he is probably refering to PCs actual meaning of Personal Computer (the term popularised by Apple Computer a long time ago).

It's good to see the debate on the best delivery mechanism for large software releases such as this; there are clearly benefits for Apple to push it through the infrastructure they already have in place.

In my opinion, this is just another nail in the coffin for Apple resellers. Not content with giving single-digit margins on hardware, Apple is now actively removing another method of generating revenue. Software has better reseller margins (~15-20%) than hardware, but Apple's progress with the App store has seen key applications (iWork, iLife) on there for a substantial discount.

There are no reseller/affiliate arrangements for the App store, and resellers can't compete with their discount offerings (as Apple set both wholesale and retail pricing). As a result, resellers business will be affected, and continue to be affected if they continue down this path.

    </rant>

    *Disclaimer: I'm an Apple reseller

Lets look at the world's highest growth economy and see what their tax rates are:

    China
The applicable tax rate for capital gains in China depends upon the nature of the taxpayer (i.e. whether the taxpayer is a person or company) and whether the taxpayer is resident or non-resident for tax purposes.
Tax-resident enterprises will be taxed at 25% in accordance with the Enterprise Income Tax Law. Non-resident enterprises will be taxed at 10% on capital gains in accordance with the Implementing Regulations to the Enterprise Income Tax Law.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capital_gains_tax#China

So they have a higher rate of capital gains tax than the US.

I believe that the only reason why Apple has not made a full transition to Core 2 is the lack of sufficient supply from Intel. As soon as they have the inventory they will stop ordering Core and move fully to Core 2.

In terms of MB and MBP, the performance difference will be related to graphics - integrated -v- a graphics board. The MBP will also have the larger display size, lighted keyboard, etc. to place them "above" the MB.

The issue for Apple is not the difference between the MB & MBP, but the competitive position of the two in the general notebook market. Moving fully to Core 2 keeps both notebooks at the top of their market segments in terms of processors - not a bad idea since the costs of the new Core 2s is very similar to the costs they paid for Cores.

I didn't quite read the whole thread, and I've seen people trying to present definitive answers representing multiple possible answers. While I don't claim to be an end all source, math is one thing that I can do and do understand.

I was tempted not to post, but, I think understanding the order of operations (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_operations)/etc is something that is relatively important.

    Multiple people have quoted the order : P(arenthes) E(xponents) M(ultiplication) D(ivision) A(ddition) S(ubtraction).

As stated, that is NOT totally accurate. Multiplication and division are the same operation, as are addition and subtraction. Thus, the order between them can be flipped. That is, P E D M A S is true, as is P E D M S A, as is P E M D S A.

If multiplication and division both appear you go from LEFT to RIGHT.

    Parenthesis are implied multiplication.

So, first, in the parenthesis we have 12, so, 48/2(12). As that is written, one does 48/2=24*12. So, as the problem is written, the answer is 288. While the method of writing the problem is certainly not the best, the problem does, to my knowledge, only have one true answer.

An important note: not all calculators correctly apply the orders of operations. Any scientific calculator form the last 5 years or so should, and if it is outputting anything other then 288 I would be interested in knowing. Some pocket calulators with + - x just go left to right.

Wolfram is, as usual, right. (http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=48%2F2%289%2B3%29)

Revenues are equal to zero if not associated with costs. Give us the profit figures. :D

    From Wikipedia:

    Samsung: Net income US$ 8.33 billion (2009)
    Apple: Profit US$ 14.01 billion (FY 2010)

Apple's profits are higher but that's because they spend about $8 billion less on R&D than Samsung ;)

Am I the only one who thinks it's not a big deal? Your carrier tracks your phone all the ff-ing time. Google has the SSL beta now, but until recently they tracked your every move.

And with the patriot act the telecos let the government move in and access data without warrants. Yet everyone seems fine with this. However, the instant your phone has a database of cell phone towers it is something nefarious. Sigh. It really would be nice if the real privacy concerns were addressed and not this low hanging fruit of a cache on your phone.

Good! I don't like Apple being highest in these kind of things. The number one retailer in the country is Walmart, doesn't make it good. Audi and Mercedes aren't the most used cars, but they're the nicest.

2002 called, they want their platform idea back.

Seriously, does anyone here even hear about tablet PCs anymore? Nope.
What happened with Microsoft Origami? Nothing.
What are people wanting to use for computing on the go? A smart phone.

Apple didn't get involved when this was "the rage" and I couldn't be happier. The idea never became anything more than a niche product in health care, manufacturing, and perhaps education. It bombed. And Apple wasn't left holding the bag on a bunch of unsold product. Another "failure in this companies beleaguered history" as it would be used as fodder in the press.

From what you wrote in the rules, the healing treasure could be awhile.

I think whoever understands this game the best (e.g., DP) should make our first decision. We can evaluate it after and learn from it. Were obviously learning in this game. BTW, my fav video games are the leveling types with HP/AP (dont have XP in this one). We could do a lot with this format if its successful

For anyone thinking Apple will release a new iPad in the fall... don't bet on it. The last two releases have shown that it takes AT LEAST several months before supply is able to adequately meet demand--especially when you look at it from a worldwide perspective. Do you really think they'd risk a shortage during the holiday season? Not a chance.

What if the 3 was pitched as a new tier, rather than a replacement? A retina class screen would probably still squash the margins to levels unacceptable to Apple. If they could simply sell the device for a higher price point, or slightly drop the iPad2s price point, then there's no real shortage risk.

Enjoy your brand new 129$ Mac OS X latest revision (the most advanced, the most unique, the most... bla bla bla bla...) carrying more than XXX features (aka... just making the Mac OS X experience more iOS-alike so you get used to AppStore since soon you'll have to go through this method of delivery as there won't be any other one, because Mr. Jobs wants more money...)
Yep... I think that 129$ sounds quite ok, for nothing :D

Though I'm not surprise... there's nothing shocking that they can implement. This "update" is aimed at training people into AppStore (aka money)... and they even charge for it :D

The nerve of these money grabbing Apple monsters to charge for their work.

What will they think of next, selling us computers we have to pay for?

    The headline is wrong.

The rumor is NOT that they would abandon Intel. The claim being made is that they would switch from x86 to ARM.

true intel could manufacture arm procs

Doesn't the iMac use the same intel chip as the MBP? Why all the hoohah about an impending MBP release, when it might also mean an upgrade for the iMac - which hasn't been bumped since it's announcement in Jan?

Now before I'm lambarsted because the iMac is not a 'pro' machine, I am a professional graphic designer and I am in the market for one.

Bring on the merom iMac!

    I can't see Blu-Ray at all.

If it were, I'd figure it'd be an option due to the cost of the drives. Sony offer a laptop in with and without forms and the "with" model costs an extra $1700... but right now I just don't think there's demand.

Based on that, it doesn't seem likely to me.

Then again, I can't see them making the case any thicker than the last-gen PowerBooks, either.

We'll find out soon enough.Internal Sony 5.25" ATAPI EIDE Blu-ray Drives Cost $750 At Fry's. So an internal mobile Blue-ray probably cost over $1,000. Plus I agree with all of the above. It's too soon. Blu-ray blank media is incredibly expensive - Prohibitively so - almost $1/GB - IE about $50 per 50GB and $25 per 25GB Blu-ray blank.

Conventional Single Sided DVD blanks are down to about 5/GB. I'd say that's a fairly large MEDIA COST GAP that only time will reduce. Until then, we've got quite a wait until the professionals drive up demand to the point where prosumers can rationalize a higher price of <20/GB or so - IE where the $1.50 price of 8.5GB Dual Layer DVDs is now - about $10 per 50GB and $5 per 25GB Blu-ray blank. Make sense? Or do any of you see it another way?

    Don't panic

Credit cards do, GPS do, you car is, any cellphone is.

The only new story is that Apple has a file with the name.

But remember that Obama as well any other president can have a cellphone with them so they can not being tracked.

The bad news is that the iPhone file is accessible.
