I wouldn't hold my breath, the Back to School iPod promo has always been a bait to help clear out old inventory. They won't make it available to buy, online or off, until after the promo ends.
As the promo in the UK ends on the 7th October, does that mean I won't see them filter through until then?

You do realize you don't have to renew the contract right? AT&T will be more than happy to keep taking your money until such time as you feel ready to sign a new one.
How about something more along the lines of "New iPhone 5 when it's released if you agree to pay our fees for another two years"?

Agreed. Google's darling Android doesn't just track cell towers. They've found it recording wi-fi networks near the user as well and transmitting that data... like every couple of minutes. (No wonder the batteries don't last on droid for more than 3-5 hours). I wish I could find the link to the article I read that in. It's certain models that have been found to do it.... right down to your GPS coordinates. Why does Google need to know this? And their users are now inadvertently spying on other people. Google has no rights to info on my wi-fi network just because someone drove past my house with an Android phone in the car.
Yet I use Google every day, but I at least know they're watching me.

Apple could do themselves a lot of favours if they came out with an offical statement, explaining what iOS does in regards of user tracking ( i.e, location database ). Some 1 line email response fired off by SJ doesn't do much good.
Once again, Apple fall down in terms of customer relations / communications. If Apple handled this correctly then all the fuss could go away in a couple days.

are people not expecting merom to go immediately into the macbook as well? i don't see a reason for apple to purposely gimp their best-selling notebook when a merom chip is supposed to cost the same as its yonah counterpart.
Intel dropped yonah prices, you didn't really expect them to be the same, did you? Apple is cashing in on higher margins on the Macbook and my guess is they'll keep it that way at least for a few months.

What I expect is not much:
Movie download service (with less than 100 movies, all current resolution of music video,s).
Updated Nano and iPod (size of flash/hard drive on both updated).
That is it. Thats all I believe we will see...
What Id like to see but think it will come out later, before Christmas:

Apple only makes high end phones, and carriers that offer the iPhone don't hesitate to maintain premium pricing on services.
Android is wide open to every manufacturer, so Android is able to fill every price range, and every carrier. I bet the majority of those Androids occupying the 37% share are not high end phones, but the stuff that is sold for $0-$100 on contract.
I'm using an Android phone because the iPhone is not compatible with my carrier of choice, but if I had the option, I'd buy it in a heartbeat. (Hoping iPhone 5 includes AWS/1700 GSM band)

It also leaves the MBP. If it is not updated, I will likely be driven into a mad frenzy where I buy some other brand of laptop. Honestly, the things Apple is forcing me to do...

I would really love to have a Mac Tablet. However, I don't see this happening anytime soon. But believe me, I would LOVE to have one.

There will be an iPhone 5 in June/July. People's expectations, and people's contracts, are too tied into the yearly update cycle for Apple to do anything else without running the risk if losing customers (especially 3GS owners) and losing buzz. It also gives other phones the chance for some anti-iPhone marketing - "the iPhone is dated, it can't keep up with modern phones, etc.".
I also don't think that the Verizon launch will play any role - Verizon is just one US carrier, for one; for another, people on V contracts won't be any better off when their contract is 7 months old than they will be when their contract was 3 months old. But people who are waiting for a verizon iP5 may not wait if it goes beyond June/July.
However, Apple may not make an announcement at WWDC. It wouldn't surprise me if they moved to the standalone stealth announcement model like they did for the iPad 2...maybe they have a special announcement the first week of June that the iP5 will be available the last week of June. I just don't really see how anyone should be surprised. It should be totally obvious to anyone who watches the smart phone market that Android would easily surpass IOS--they are indeed everywhere and I'm sure when it comes time to get a new phone--those with no preconceived ideas on what they want will walk out of the store with some kind of Android. Most who go in looking for an iPhone will probably leave with one. As long as Apple--and their shareholders are happy, I don't think it really matters.
Phone users will be the first to see feel the impact of these developments as Android ecosystem will see much faster development than iOS. With more and better options, users will overwhelmingly switch to Android. And then, it'll be AAPL shareholders turn to feel the impact.

Out of interest - and since you already use a computer near your TV :). If a tablet can do everything you describe EXCEPT be a regular Mac too, would it still be of interest?
ie: If it allows you (as you say) to show guests your iPhoto gallery directly on the pad or on the TV, Home movies or downloads at your fingertips (no need to cue them in the office)... and if it costs less than half what a MacBook costs... is it still appealing?
What about if it can interface with MacMini to become a remote screen? (ie: do everything you say, but only when in the house)

A living room orientated tablet seemed to fit.
Of course this so called tablet could be several different things — a true video iPod, a supered up remote, a UMCP based micro mac. I just find it fun to speculate based on the info at hand:)

Not possible with current laptop architecture. The only x86 CPUs AFAIK that are capable of multi-socket systems are Opterons and Xeons.

Problem I have is timing. Why does Apple continue to release the new iPhone / iPad yet we have to wait months afterwards for the iOS update to take advantage of them? :confused: Last year it took until November for the original iPad update. Now they're going to offer the iPhone 5 with a several month lag for the iOS 5 upgrade?

A chip update has NOTHING to do with any outstanding issues, sorry...Apple is fully capable of fixing those (if any) with a better design AND a better chip.

Apple doesn't need to deliver a revolutionary phone-like device to grab marketshare. It's more about integrating a device within the system... and that is something Apple is good at.
Phones, new features, and additional functionality are a dime-a-dozen. New bells and whistles are added all the time, that's not what the market needs. Someone (hopefully Apple!) needs to take some of these advancements and deliver a products that integrates them in a logical and intuative way.
I second this insight. The market has been exposed to the gimmicks and now that the package has worn thin they are looking for an intuitive, durable and reliable phone that has some features you'd expect in a computer but mostly a phone that can be used with any carrier and doesn't need to be updated every 9 months.

ARM have been ahead in mobile for well over a decade. Intel haven't caught up yet, admitiely some of that is due to Intel not really trying.
